We caught up with Minnick to discuss all things bourbon. He co-created the Bourbon & Beyond music festival with Danny Wimmer in 2017 and will be back on site this week in Louisville as the festival comes back to life for the first year since the pandemic began. Fred Minnick is an author, podcaster and bourbon expert. College professor and Vietnam veteran James Barbour Matlock’s name is selected to stop a large-scale conspiracy on an undercover mission that is going to put his life in danger. The Matlock Paper is a standalone novel by Robert Ludlum. It had an all-star cast that included Rutger Hauer and Dennis Hopper. If You Like Robert Ludlum Books, You’ll Love… Notes: Although the Covert-One series was created by Ludlum, the novels themselves were written by other authors.įollowing Ludlum’s death, the Jason Bourne series was continued by American author Eric Van Lustbader and Brian Freeman. And he’s prepared to die just like his father did with the last generation of the Weavers.īut what if saving the world isn’t enough anymore? What if the only thing that matters is saving Hale? He’s trained for this task his entire life. Harrison William Davenport IIIĪs the Keeper of the Heart of the Earth, Harrison must bring the final key to the Weavers if they’re to stop the pestilents. He can take a little time away from his pursuit of a doctorate in astrophysics to save the world.Įxcept that the final spell is poised to kill all the Weavers and their last hope lies with him finding his soul mate. Not exactly what he expected when he got kidnapped by the pestilents, but Hale’s good rolling with the punches. It was like visiting old friends which bring in all the warm and fuzzy feelings. Even when he was struggling with his feelings for Bash, he didn’t back away and face their friendship with sincerity.Īnother favorite part of the story was the cameo appearance from people from past books. Kieran’s down to earth personality and compassion made him so attractive. I loved Bash’s sass and confidence, which were also traits that captured Kieran’s attention. However, with the increased time spend together while they explore the city, the sexual tension between the two grew drastically and unexpected feelings surfaced gradually.īoth Kieran and Bash were lovable characters. I loved the dynamics between the Kieran and Bash, from their flirty banter to funny adventures that they share while they agreed to hang out as friends. I was super excited when it’s finally his time and the added bonus was the cross-over between Brooke’s South Haven crew with Ella’s Chicagoverse. I’ve been waiting for Bash’s story for a long time. In 2011, The National Gallery called Struth with the unexpected request to photograph Queen Elizabeth II for a series celebrating her 2012 Diamond Jubilee. Struth’s photographs are genre defying, complex and strategic shots that penetrate the human imagination. Thomas Struth is a contemporary photographer whose images capture a wide breadth of subject matter, ranging from rainforests to urban scenes and intimate portraits. Not only are Leibovitz’s photographs iconic but the photographer, in this sitting, is known to have suggested that the Crown was “a bit dressy”. This nod toward stability was meaningful in a shattered, post-war Britain. The fourth photograph differs from the series the Queen is pictured wearing a black cloak and her image is superimposed onto a dramatic and wild-weathered backdrop of Buckingham Palace Gardens. Beaton referenced historic royal portraiture to invoke the continuum of the dynasty. They capture The Queen resplendent in jewels, royal gowns, robes and furs, against the backdrop of the White Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace. In the series of four photographs she was commissioned to take of The Queen, three are very traditional, albeit presented with typical Leibovitz flair. Leibovitz is best known for her engaging and dramatic celebrity portraits, capturing the likes of The Rolling Stones and featuring in Vanity Fair. I also felt that because I was an American I had an advantage over every other photographer or painter who had made a portrait of her. Queen Elizabeth II, photographed by Annie Leibovitz, 2007 Dworkin's argument, she points out, is the stickiest question of feminism: Can a woman fight the power when he shares her bed? (This argument was quickly-and falsely-simplified to all sex is rape” in the public arena, adding fire to Dworkin's already radical persona.) In her introduction to this twentieth-anniversary edition of Intercourse, Ariel Levy, the author of Female Chauvinist Pigs, discusses the circumstances of Dworkin's untimely death in the spring of 2005, and the enormous impact of her life and work. In it, Dworkin argues that in a male supremacist society, sex between men and women constitutes a central part of women's subordination to men. Intercourse enraged as many readers as it inspired when it was first published in 1987. Now the book that she's best known for-in which she provoked the argument that ultimately split apart the feminist movement-is being reissued for the young women and men of the twenty-first century. The power of her writing, the passion of her ideals, and the ferocity of her intellect have spurred the arguments and activism of two generations of feminists. Andrea Dworkin, once called Feminism's Malcolm X,” has been worshipped, reviled, criticized, and analyzed-but never ignored. 12-year-old Adelaide Goode has never been good enough.Ever the disappointment, she's the weakest witch born in three centuries and has absolutely zero chance-as the town's fat girl-of winning the Cranberry Hollow Halloween pageant. In other words, that everything I wrote is a lot of baloney. Of course, you could also end up deciding that nothing of what you’re reading is true, that I made it all up. However, don’t ask me to explain in a couple of sentences what it’s about because it’s too complicated, so you’ll have to continue reading if you want to know more.Īnd believe me, you should keep reading or you’ll miss out on the opportunity of losing yourself in some captivating stories and totally awesome adventures. That was my first reaction, too, when I found out. There, I said it and I bet many of you are asking yourselves: An Heir of what? Honestly, I’m not bragging I’m an Heir to the Superior Beings. You see, I had always thought I was a normal kid, too, no different from anyone else but I found out I wasn’t. I imagine some of you are rolling your eyes, wondering what sort of incredible adventures I could have had, seeing I’m just a normal twelve-year-old kid from a small town in Italy that hardly anybody has heard of. My name is Achille Chiorri, I’m twelve years old and I wasn’t very good at composition in school, so I never would have thought I’d be capable of writing anything much longer than a couple of pages without having a total brain meltdown.īut here I am, my fingers whizzing over the keyboard, churning out pages and pages about all the things that have happened to me, and the amazing adventures I’ve had. I really felt that the story came full circle at the end and quite liked how Wiswell chose to wrap it up. This is a story that deserves to be read I highly recommend it. But this is a more insidious form of trauma, one that follows you around, can find you wherever you go, and has the ability to hurt those around you. Bird in the denouement is perhaps the best example of Wiswell's plotting - because recovering from emotionally traumatic abusive relationship rarely takes the form of a physical battle with one's abuser. The refrain from the title ("that story isn't the story I’m telling today") is used very effectively to explore the way our narratives can shape our trauma and how we deal with it. Bird gave him, and which well up with blood whenever Mr. Bird, and the entire story is about his recovery from the PTSD, with the emotional wounds that he suffers given material form as the physical wounds that Mr. The protagonist is an escaped familiar of a monstrous Mr. Wiswell is telling a deep story about the very human and real process of dealing with trauma, told through the lens of the fantastical. His work has appeared in Nature Futures, Fireside Magazine, Nightmare Magazine, and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. He won the 2021 Nebula for Best Short Story, and is a finalist for the Hugo, World Fantasy Award, and British Fantasy Award. This one is perfect - it's extremely tight, thematically speaking. John Wiswell is an ace/aro writer who lives where New York keeps all its trees. Another of the Hugo 2022 novelette nominees. |
